Shower Thoughts: BAYC will be hacked forever, and that's probably a good thing
If nobody wants to hack your ape, then you should give it away.
Thought
You might not have caught it this week (because it happens so often), but another Bored Ape Yacht Club hack happened. Hack added up to ~$3M.
This is the latest of many hacks targeting the highly valued collection of BAYC which includes multiple franchises now such as MAYC, Punks, and Meebits.
Bad actors are not going to stop. Getting lucky to snag just one ape jpeg gives a payout of ~$40K, the price of the cheapest BAYC NFT at the time of this writing.
If you’re a proud holder of such a prestigious, exclusive NFT, how do you feel?
Annoyed?
Angry?
Disgusted?
In my opinion as long as there are bad actors trying to get their metaversal claws around your ape, you should rather be pleased, happy, excited. That means it’s still worth something.
The moment BAYC NFTs are no longer the stock images used to write NFT hack articles, it’s the beginning of the end.
Idea
Which brings me to (probably stupid) idea. What if Discord spam and ban data is used as a leading indicator to predict the value of NFT collections?
More spam and bans = desirability = value
Less spam and bans = unwanted = irrelevance
Discord has the data for spams and bans. I believe there’s also an API endpoint for the list of bans for a server.
GET/guilds/{guild.id}/bans
Surely popular bots (looking at you MEE6, Probot, Dyno) should also be able to return data from their ‘warning’ and ‘autoban’ functions. If they allow queries for this information and then someone aggregates the data across NFT discord servers, there might be something interesting…
Shower Thoughts are exactly as labelled—random, short musings which probably won’t lead anywhere. I’ve also been called out for crazy ideas, so that too. NFA DYOR IANAL blah blah blah…
